Description

She couldn’t look. But she couldn’t close her eyes, either, because images immediately flooded her vision. Therefore she just kept staring blankly ahead of her, the silence around her deafening. Every now and then someone moved just slightly, fabric rustling or the bottom of a boot scraping against metal, but no one said a word. A muffled sniffle here and there. She knew the others around her were shedding silent tears, just as she was, and she also knew that were she to lay her gaze on any one of them, even for a second, she would start bawling uncontrollably. Now she could at least just let her tears flow freely which didn’t ease the pain in her chest, though.

Daring to raise her gaze at the wall, her self-control almost failed. So many familiar names were already there; names of the people she had grown close or at least acquainted to over the course of time; who had bravely fought to the very end. The most recent additions induced the rawest pain, but the older ones were by no means forgotten and still brought forth a melancholic fondness in her. The crew of the Normandy SR-1 had eventually accepted her as one of their own, an appreciated member of the crew. Even Pressly, although he had been rather xenophobic in the beginning. She had never dreamed of feeling so welcomed outside her own community.

Thankful for the high-tech suit and its waste disposal system she cried more openly now, unable to really halt the tear flow. She watched as shaky fingers brushed the name plate, still unattached to the wall above Anderson’s, painfully compassionate towards the one carrying the plate. She had always had a crush on the Commander, but were she the human’s partner, she wasn’t sure she could have stood there so valiantly, honoring the fallen hero’s name in front of the whole crew. Her lover’s name, her soul mate’s name. Just thinking about it made shivers run through her whole body, and she both regretted and was glad for all the selfish reasons that she had never had a chance to pursue a relationship with the Commander. The pain was almost unbearable as it was, as she had lost a best friend, Captain of the ship, an equivalent of an older and wiser sibling, the object of her puppy love and just the warmest, most compassionate person she had ever come to know.

Shepard, you bosh’tet.

She could only lament her loss, and her only comfort was that she was not alone with her grief, proven by the now audible sounds of crying around her.
